Our Summer Time Tips for the Elderly

After a long cold winter and the rain in  spring it is easy to forget how dangersous the heat in summer can be especially for the elderly. Research suggests that nearly 700 people die each year due to heat relation illnesses such as heat stroke, dehydration and heat exhaustion after spending too much time in the sun.

Our tips for enjoying the sun with your family are –

  •  Stay hydrated by drinking at least eight  glasses of water per day. Avoid tea or coffee or any caffeinated, sugary, and alcoholic beverages.
  • Dress sensibly for the heat. Loose fitting clothes made of light-weight natural fabrics will help you stay cool. Light colours also help.
  • Exercise or run your errands when its cooler ie in the morning or evening
  • Wear an VVB protection everyday< wide brim hats, wrap around sunglasses with UV protection and lip balm also help
  • When its extremely hot stay in doors, but if indoors excess eightyfive degrees, head to somewhere with air con.
  • To keep inside your home cool keep blinds and curtains closed but windows open. Turn electric lights off or down.
  • Take a cool bath or shower to lower body temperature.
  • Eat healthy foods like sandwiches, salads, fresh fruits, and vegetables.Avoid heavy meals.
  • Arrange for your friends, family, loved ones or your carer to keep an eye on you
